I went to the Zoo yesterday in my home towm. Me, personally, I love the Zoo,the variety of animals, the chance to see them up close, but I can understand why some people are opposed to them. The fact that the animals are in cages or glass walled enclosures(in our zoo), that they have no freedom to behave as they would in the wild in regards to catching prey and the ability to roam at will. But, with the stage of the ecology in the world and the fact that each day we lose entire species of animals due to destroyed habitat and the incursion of man, isnt it better that some species are kept going purely due to the fact that they are held in captivity?
Most zoos parcipate in breeding programs and conservation with the aim of reintroducing species back into the wild. Isnt it good that at least someone, somewhere is trying to stop the extinction of species?
How many people would say 'I would rather that species was extinct than alive in captivity?'
So I suppose that is my question, Zoos may not be morally right in some eyes, but they are a necessay evil. Who agrees or disagrees?
